Down vs Synthetic Insulation: What's Actually the Difference?

If you've ever bought an insulated jacket, or tried to, you've probably hit this question. Down or synthetic? Down what? what is Down? Down Feathers. Synthetic what? What is synthetic? Synthetic Insulation.

Most product pages don't give you a straight answer. They just tell you what their jacket uses and why theirs is best and slap a brand tax on there. 

And honestly, most people don't even know what insulation is inside the jacket they're already wearing. If this is the first time you're coming across these terms, you're not alone. Most people just buy a jacket because it looks good and feels warm. The insulation question comes later when you're looking at obtaining another jacket. 

Here's a breakdown of both, what they're each good at and how to figure out which one actually suits the way you move with what is a hopefully easy explanation to digest. 

What Down Insulation Actually Is

Down (Down Feathers) is the soft underlayer found beneath the outer feathers of ducks and geese. Not the feathers themselves, it's the fine, fluffy clusters underneath. Those clusters trap air exceptionally well relative to their weight which is why down has been the benchmark for insulation for decades.

Down quality is measured in fill power. The higher the number, the more loft each gram of down creates and the more warm air it traps per unit of weight. 600 fill power is a reasonable starting point and 800 and above is considered premium. The jackets you see from the big outdoor brands at $400-600 USD are typically running 800-900 fill power goose down with carefully sourced materials.

For sheer warmth-to-weight ratio, down is still hard to beat at the high end.

What Synthetic Insulation Actually Is

Synthetic insulation is engineered polyester, either continuous filament fibres or short-staple fibres designed to mimic the loft and warmth of natural down without using any animal materials.

Early synthetic insulation was heavier, stiffer, and bulkier than down by a significant margin. The fill weight is measured in grams per square meter (GSM). That number tells you more about how a synthetic jacket will actually perform than any other spec on the label.

The question has never been whether synthetic is good.

The question is what you're optimising for, when you need it and when is best.

The Differences

Warmth When Wet/Damp

This is the biggest practical difference and the one that matters most in unpredictable conditions.

Down collapses and doesn't work very well it gets wet. The clusters clump together and lose their loft, and stops retaining its insulation. A soaked down jacket is pretty much a wet blanket. It won't keep you warm and it takes a long time to dry out fully. Anyone who's been caught in rain or heavy clumpy damp snow while wearing a down jacket knows exactly what this feels like. Not great.

Synthetic insulation continues to insulate even when wet, the fibres don't collapse the same way as down. You do lose some warmth in soaked and saturated conditions but not all of it, and the best part? The jacket dries out significantly faster. 

Drying Time

Synthetic dries much faster than down. If your jacket gets soaked, a synthetic fill will be functional again in a fraction of the time it takes a down jacket to recover. This is a practical consideration for multi-day trips, variable climates, and travel where you don't know what the day is going to throw at you. 

I think it's somewhere around 15-20% faster in drying efficiency depending on the fill.

Packability

Down wins here, especially at high fill powers. A 800-fill jacket compresses into a very packable small ball. Synthetic compresses well but generally takes up a little more volume at the same warmth rating.

That said, modern lightweight synthetic jackets are far more packable than they were a decade ago. A well-built synthetic jacket will fit comfortably into a daypack or travel bag. The gap has narrowed big time.

Weight

At the same warmth level and ratio, down is typically lighter. 

This matters most at the extreme end like expedition gear, ultra-light alpine pursuits, situations where you're counting every gram. 

For everyday outdoor use, the weight difference between a quality synthetic and a comparable down jacket is ultimately marginal enough that most people wouldn't notice it in at all.

Price

Synthetic is generally less expensive to produce and to buy. High-quality down, particularly responsibly sourced high fill power goose down, is expensive, and that cost flows through to the jacket. A premium down piece costs what it costs because the raw material is genuinely costly to source and process.

This is one area where synthetic offers real value. You're not sacrificing warmth. You're just not paying for a premium animal-sourced material where you don't need it.

Care and Maintenance

Down requires more attention. It needs to be washed carefully, dried thoroughly (usually with tennis balls in the dryer to re-loft the clusters), and stored uncompressed or it'll lose loft over time. Done right, down lasts well. Done wrong, it degrades.

Synthetic is more forgiving. It washes and dries easily, handles compression storage without long-term damage, and is generally harder to ruin through normal use. 

Both materials will degrade quicker than expected if improperly cared for. 

A Simple Way to Think About It

Down excels in cold, dry, controlled conditions where warmth-to-weight is the priority, high alpine environments, clear-weather expeditions, situations where you can manage your gear carefully.

Synthetic performs better across variable, unpredictable real-world conditions, wet weather, mixed climates, travel, everyday adventures where you're moving between environments.

Most people who buy outdoor gear aren't doing expeditions that push the edge of down performance. They're hiking in changeable weather. They're travelling with one bag. They're going from a cold morning to a warmer afternoon and back again. They're at a ski resort where it snows one hour and rains the next.

For those people, synthetic is the more practical choice. Not because down isn't good, but because synthetic handles more situations without needing special treatment. Way more versatility. 

Why We Chose Synthetic for the Z-Light

I've owned down jackets my whole life and still do and I genuinely like them. The warmth you get from a good puffer is hard to argue with, and at the premium end they're genuinely impressive pieces of gear.

But when caught in wet environments, the jacket gets heavy, stops working, and takes forever to dry out and becomes another piece to lug around whether in hikes or camping or any outdoor activities.  That's fine if you're going back to a warm lodge. It's not fine if you're moving.

When we were designing the Z-Light, we tested three fill weights: 40gsm, 60gsm, and 100gsm. The 40gsm ran too light for the temperatures we wanted to cover. The 100gsm added bulk and weight we didn't need, it was essentially an overkill really. The 60gsm landed exactly where we wanted.

60gsm is the fill weight that made the most sense for what this jacket is built to do. Light enough to keep the jacket under 500g across every size. Substantial enough to perform in cold. It insulates when wet, dries fast, and holds its structure after repeated compression. For a jacket built for versatile outdoor use rather than one specific condition, it felt legit.

The Z-Light also uses a 40D nylon ripstop shell with a DWR (durable water repellent) finish. That outer layer sheds light rain and wind before it ever reaches the insulation underneath. But of course, as with all gear that uses DWR, it does run out the more its used, but it can simply be fixed by reapplying any DWR spray or glue or anything that works on fabrics. The system works together. The shell deflects moisture, and the synthetic fill handles warmth even in the conditions the shell can't fully stop.

Down would have been a different jacket for a different customer. Synthetic let us build something that works across more of the trips people actually go on and this is just the start for our brand.

Which One Is Right for You

Down might be the better choice if:

  • You're in consistently cold, dry conditions and are doing something on the higher end of outdoor use
  • Weight and packability are your top priority and every gram counts  in what you will be carrying 
  • You'll take care of it properly
  • Budget is of no concern

Synthetic might be the better choice if:

  • You'll be in mixed, wet, or unpredictable conditions
  • You want versatility across different uses and climates
  • You want something low-maintenance and durable
  • You want strong warmth at a better price point
  • Budget is of consideration

Neither is objectively superior, just optimised for different priorities. The right one depends on what you're actually doing in it.
